COACHING CHANGES

ODDS N ENDS
  • It pays to be ready. Buried on the 4th string? Three games into the season, 4th string Harvard University quarterback Rich Irvin found himself in an unexpected position. He started at quarterback in the Crimson’s 4th game of the year due to a suspension and a few injuries of their other QB’s. This is why you always have to be ready to play at any time.
  • College coaches are now signing up for Google alerts so they can track articles and news on individual athletes they are interested in or recruiting.
  • Last year Steve Aponavicius snuck onto the Boston College football field to kick some field goals for fun. A soccer player in high school, Aponavicius never played football before. A team assistant saw him kicking and approached him about trying out for the team. On October 12 in a game verses Virginia Tech, Aponavicius suited up for BC as their starting kicker and made 2 field goals and a couple extra points. Before the game he was asking teammates how to put his equipment on.
  • Before you dismiss private college as being too expensive, consider the fiscal state of many state schools and the lack of scholarship dollars they are going to be able to offer. While private school is often 3 times as expensive as state school, if you have a hook, you may be able to receive as much if not more scholarship and academic/financial aid dollars at a private school. A hook is something that makes you stand out from the pack of applicants. Athletics is a hook, being extremely smart is a hook and the combination of the two make for a powerful hook in the recruiting process. I met someone who was working with a family and they got two offers, $20,000 a year from a private school and free books from a public school. In the end the private school will be less expensive. You should also remember that room and board will be roughly the same price at a state school as it will be at a private school, so focus on the tuition difference.
