QUESTION
I play football. A college has been asking for visits, tapes and a transcript. I have not cleared myself with the college board because I am only a junior. Can i do these things or do I have to clear myself first?

ANSWER
For starters, you don't clear yourself with the College Board, they have nothing to do with it. The College Board simply administers the SAT test. You "register" with the Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse at the end of your Junior Year, regardless of what your grades or SAT scores are at the time. At the conclusion of senior year, you send your final transcript to the Clearinghouse again. The web site is www.ncaaclearinghouse.net - they oversee eligibility for all high school athletes wishing to play NCAA D1 or NCAA D2 athletics (not D3) and your counselor will have forms and more information for you and you can use the web site as well for more information or to register with the clearinghouse.

As far as visits go, there are official visits and unofficial visits. Official visits are paid by the school and each team is limited as to how many visits they can offer. I think D1 football is 45 or 50. Most visits take place in the summer before senior year or the fall of senior year for football. Basketball visits can take place after Jan 1st of junior year as they have a more aggressive timetable. You cannot have an official visit until you have provided the college a transcript of your current grades and an SAT/ACT score. You don't have to be registered with the Clearinghouse, but you have to provide the college you are visiting some official document from your high school with current grades and test scores. Your test score can also be provided by the College Board to the college. When in doubt, simply as the coach what they need.

As far as videos go, you can send a video any time and you can actually call a college coach at any time. While coaches are restricted as to when they can call you, you can call them every day of high school if you wish and email them as often as you want.

Much of football recruiting is done through video. Most coaches want to see a series of highlights and then perhaps two distinct halves on the tape in case they want to watch more. In reality, you should be asking the coach what type of tape they want to see, rather than sending what you think they want to see as all coaches are different. This schools obviously knows your name and knows that you are  a potential recruit and at this point you should be going out of your way to communicate with them and find out exactly what they want and/or need from you.
